Thorough spring preparation is crucial to start the new season safely and with full riding enjoyment. The cold winter months are over. The sun is shining again and temperatures are rising. It's spring and that also means: the scooter season is starting. Regardless of whether you have been riding during the winter or whether you have stored your e-vehicle well protected during this time, there are always a few things to consider before your first ride. We have summarised the most important tips for a successful start to the season with your e-scooter here
Why is the spring check so important?
Riding safety comes first. Long downtimes, cold and damp all affect e-scooters. A thorough inspection is essential so that you can start the new season without any nasty surprises. Check all safety-relevant components and the technical condition of your vehicle
E-scooter insurance and licence plates
First things first: check the validity of the licence plate!
This is because e-scooter insurance is not only necessary, but also required by law. Every owner of a motor vehicle - and this includes e-scooters, e-scooters and senior mobility scooters - is required by law to take out motor vehicle liability insurance (with the exception of our 6 km/h Maximus MX4-6, Rolektro E-Trike 6, E-Quad 6 and ERS-6 mobility scooters). This liability insurance is liable for damage or accidents with third parties caused by your e-scooter.
The licence plate or the corresponding insurance is valid for one traffic year. This always begins on the first of March and ends automatically in February. The deadline for changing the licence plate is therefore 1 March each year.
The colour of the insurance number plate changes annually between blue, green and black. This means that invalid insurance cover is quickly recognisable on public roads.
Therefore, find out which sticker colour is currently valid and, if necessary, renew the insurance cover of your e-scooter before riding it on public roads.

Proper maintenance of e-scooters
The external appearance of your scooter not only plays an aesthetic role, but also a protective one. You should therefore clean the painted surface thoroughly and maintain it regularly.
If you have continued to use your e-scooter during the winter months, it may have been exposed to other external influences such as frost, salt and dirt, so cleaning is now essential.
But even if your electric scooter has been stored over the winter and has been thoroughly cleaned beforehand, dust or dirt can accumulate under a cover or in a garage after such a long time.
When cleaning, look out for rust and repair any minor damage. The easiest way to clean your e-scooter is with a mild cleaner and a microfibre cloth. Protective agents against environmental influences extend the service life of your scooter and give it a new shine.
Please do not use a steam or high-pressure cleaner to avoid possible damage to the electronics!
Check lighting & electronics - For optimum visibility
After successful cleaning, the e-scooter now shines in new splendour. The next step is to check the electronics and lighting system (indicators, headlights, tail lights, brake lights) of your e-scooter to ensure that the roads you want to ride on are brightly lit.
It is important to take a look at your scooter's electronics to avoid unexpected problems. Therefore, check all electronic systems for possible faults. Are the lights and indicators working properly? Replacing defective bulbs or LEDs is a quick job and ensures optimum visibility on the road.

Check brakes - safety first
Functioning brakes are the be-all and end-all for your safety. Start with a visual inspection: Are the brake levers, brake cables, brake discs and brake pads intact? Look for cracks, corrosion or unusual wear.
The next step is the function test. Pull the brake levers - does the e-scooter react directly and evenly? If the braking effect is weaker than usual, you should readjust the brakes or replace worn parts.

Adjust tyre tread & air pressure - For safe grip
The correct tyre pressure not only increases the service life of your tyres, but also ensures stability and riding comfort. Check the tyre pressure before your first ride - depending on the model, 2.0 to 2.5 bar with an even load is ideal. The exact values for your e-scooter can be found in the corresponding Rolektro manual.
Also check the tyre tread. Is the tread depth still sufficient? Are there any cracks, dents or porous areas? Replace the tyres if necessary!

Battery & range - The heart of your scooter
Before the start of the new season, special attention should also be paid to the battery. Check it:
- State of charge - Charge the battery fully before you set off.
- Range - Has the range decreased significantly compared to the previous year?
- Error messages - Does the display show any warnings?
- Age & condition - Batteries lose power over time. A power loss of more than 50 % can indicate a defective battery.
Important: Even in winter, batteries should be charged every 4 weeks to avoid deep discharge. If this is not done, it may be the cause of a loss of performance.

Tips for the first ride - get started again safely
Before you get back on the road, we recommend a short test drive - preferably in a traffic-calmed area or on a road with little traffic.
This is how to proceed:
- Function check: Start the engine, test the throttle, brakes, lights and indicators.
- Adjust your riding position: Handlebars, mirrors and seat should be comfortably adjusted.
- Regain riding feel: Test the braking behaviour, steering and acceleration.
- Keep traffic rules in mind: Watch out for other road users, especially at junctions and zebra crossings.
Tip: A gentle re-entry is particularly important for senior mobiles. Practice makes perfect!
